Holiness (Part 2) What is holiness?

June 20, 2016.Joel.0 Likes.9 Comments

Make sure to have read the previous post, “We are not saved by works, but we are saved unto works!” prior to this one!

To begin holiness is not a dress code; it is the nature of God; its the path to sanctification, and it is essential to salvation! True holiness does not fall under a category but rather it is the category that every part of our lives should line up with.

Hebrews 12:14 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:

The origin of the word “holiness’ is Akkadian and Sumerian (earth’s earliest cultures). The later Hebrew word “qodesh” and the Greek word “hagiosune” continue the meanning of “withdrawal.” Therefore, scholars define holiness to mean “separate” and “apart.” However this does not mean we withdraw from something, but rather withdrawing UNTO something! God created man in his image however when man fell into sin he had lost one of the most essential features of that image – HOLINESS. We were created to have a relationship with an holy God as a holy creature created by God. However disobedience stripped that away from man and now we are born into a unholy and sinful nature.

How can we once again withdraw into man’s original state of communion with God? The answer starts with justification by God’s grace and leads to sanctification by our faith. To better understand let’s look at what sanctification is.

  • Definition: to make holy; set apart as sacred; consecrate. 2. to purify or free from sin

Now sanctification has no destination on this earth but rather is a path we follow everyday. This path starts with every new Christian that has followed the plan of salvation. They are immediately saved at that point even though they have yet to start living a holiness lifestyle. However a believer will lose their salvation if they do not allow God to lead them to holiness! Hebrews 6:1-9, “Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. And this will we do, if God permit. For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame. For the earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed, receiveth blessings from God: But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned. But beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak.

This path of sanctification will not end until we are taken in the rapture and transformed into a state of complete conformity to Christ!

Holiness is not an option when choosing to live for God, and it does involve separation from the world!

1 Thessalonians 4:7-8, “For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness. He therefore that despiseth, despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his holy spirit.

1 Peter 1:15 – 16, “But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of converstaion; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

1 Corinthians 3:16-17, “Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy” for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.

It is obvious that when one has followed the plan of salvation, and has been filled with God’s Spirit, that a lifestyle change of separation from the world must take place!

Where Can I Find Holiness Teaching?

  • Ultimately it is the Bible that provides us with the principles of holiness
  • Spiritual leadership that help us apply Biblical principles with the culture and situations we face today
  • The Holy Ghost that will convict us if we allow it

Once again holiness is not a dress code!

Now that we have concluded that an outside change should take place let’s reiterate holiness is not what you wear! However true holiness will affect what you wear, how you talk, and how you live your life!

When looking at holiness standards, one must not view these as Heaven or Hell issues! We don’t live a separated lifestyle to be saved we live a separated lifestyle because we are saved!

In conclusion this post has discussed holiness and in a future post we will look at holiness standards specifically found in God’s word! However I will not address anything not specifically in the Bible. While there are many standards taken from principles found in the Bible it is not my place to discuss certain applications- for that is the job of your Pastor. God bless!
